As a Mexican-American, I had the impression that I was "ni de aqui ni de ella." In a bicultural world, I had to prove who I was and who I wasn't. Trying to strike a beautiful balance between my Latina roots and gratitude for being born in such a beautiful country with so many opportunities.
As a first-generation Mexican-American, I was raised to respect my heritage and keep traditions alive.
I was fortunate to have visited Mexico on several occasions. I ended up going to the "Tianguis" (Markets) of Mexico City, Torreon, and Durango. In this visit, I would take in the artisan creations and the way they reflected the beauty of my culture. I always buy artisan-made goods so I could bring a little piece of “The Mother Land” home with me.
My mother Carmen inspired me to embark on this journey as a boutique owner. We discussed opening a boutique together before she died. It took me about two years after her death to pursue this dream, and here we are.
My mother's family name is De La O. As a child, I thought her last name was unique and admired how it sounded and looked when written. De La O Boutique was born and named after my mother to honor her wishes and memory.
The main goal of De La O Boutique is to uplift indigenous artisans in Mexico and support them in developing a self-sufficient way of life through fair trade, all the while working to preserve their culture and keep their traditions alive. De La O Boutique has partnered with other businesses that share the same philosophy and appreciation for indigenous culture.
Slow fashion with an impact.
